New Delhi: The Indian women’s hockey team, led by dependable midfielder Salima Tete, has been named for the upcoming Argentina tour, with experienced striker Deepika and veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia making a strong comeback.
The 24-member squad will take on world heavyweights Argentina women’s national field hockey team in a four-match series scheduled from April 13 to 17, 2026, in Buenos Aires. The tour is seen as a crucial preparatory assignment ahead of the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup and the Asian Games later this year.
Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne emphasized that the tour will provide an opportunity to test different combinations and give exposure to young players against top-level competition. “It is important for us to build depth within the squad and allow players to adapt to high-intensity international hockey,” he said.
Deepika returns after a long injury layoff, having missed the recent World Cup qualifiers, while Savita rejoins the squad after being rested. Their inclusion is expected to significantly strengthen India’s attack and defense. Deepika’s role as a drag-flick specialist had been notably missed, with players like Manisha Chauhan, Udita, Annu, and Navneet Kaur stepping in during her absence.
The squad features a balanced mix of experienced and emerging players. Goalkeeping duties will be shared by Savita and Bichu Devi Kharibam, who impressed during the qualifiers. The defensive unit includes Nikki Pradhan, Ishika Chaudhary, Sushila Chanu, Jyoti, and Udita, while the midfield will be anchored by Salima Tete alongside Vaishnavi Phalke, Sakshi Rana, and others.

In attack, players like Baljeet Kaur, Navneet Kaur, Mumtaz Khan, and Lalremsiami are expected to play key roles. Young talents such as Rutuja Pisal, Ishika, and Sakshi Rana have also shown promise and will be keen to make their mark.
India will play matches on April 13, 14, 16, and 17, with all fixtures scheduled in the evening as per Indian Standard Time.
With the return of key players and a blend of youth and experience, the Argentina tour offers India a vital platform to fine-tune strategies and stake claims for major tournaments ahead.
